With 3D viewing taking imagination of people to a very different level, cell phone manufacturers are trying to come up with handsets which give consumers an enthralling 3D experience. Realizing the 3D boom, LG has come up with a smartphone, LG Optimus 3D which seeks to give people 3D experience on the phone itself. Of late LG has been trying to come out with innovative products to recapture its losing market share in the smartphone segment. Optimus 3D measures 128.8 x 68 x 11.9 mm. We expected this since the device boasts of a massive 4.3inches screen. The phone is a bit bigger than Optimus 2X and you cannot slip it easily into every pocket. The handset is quite bulky weighing 168 grams. Despite being constructed entirely out of plastic, Optimus 3D looks a pretty good-looking handset. While the front of the phone is made up of faux brushed metal, the back of the phone has a rubbery plastic along with a metal stripe. Because of the thickness of the device, initially you can face a problem while gripping it. But all in all, LG has done a fine job in giving a neat and polished look to Optimus 3D.

The phone is equipped with a massive 4.3 inches 3D enabled LCD capacitive touch screen. The screen is capable of displaying 16M colors of resolution measuring 480×800 pixels. One of the major features of LG Optimus 3D is its screen. One thing to note is the fact that the 3D mode works only in landscape mode and that only one person can share the 3D goodness of the screen. The 3D affects are very impressive. The colors displayed are sharp, vibrant and crisp. We wished that the screen to be AMOLED in nature which would have improved sunlight legibility. Anyways, overall the screen performance will impress most of the users and kudos to LG for carving out a great screen.

Apart from the 3D feature, another great feature of the phone is its processor. Optimus 3D is equipped with a Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor. Thanks to the processor, operations of the device are made fast and at the same time one gets to enjoy high end videos and games on the phone. We were disappointed to find that the phone runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo) instead on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). This is one of the serious issues with Optimus 3D considering that Gingerbread has been around for quite sometime. However, it can be upgraded to Android 2.3.

Optimus 3D comes with a standard Android gallery which organizes every image and video into very neat folders which supports pinch zooming and sorting by date. With the help of the send feature you can quickly share photos via Facebook, Twitter, Picasa etc. Zooming and panning is quite fast and smooth. There are a couple of great interface modes which is certainly looks good and runs smoothly.

One of the major reasons for the heavy weight of Optimus 3D is the presence of a couple of 5MP camera sensors. With the help of these you can capture 3D images and videos. Thanks to the camera apps, users can switch between 2D and 3D mode. One also gets advanced features such as autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging. The camera captures images of resolution measuring 2560×1920 pixels. Thanks to the 3D picture effect, the quality of images is really fine. In some of the cases we found the images to be blurry. The camera of the phone supports various focus modes and digital zoom.

Video quality of the phone is pretty good. In 2D mode, the device captures 1080p videos@30fps while in 3D mode, the videos are captured at 720p@30fps. Videos were very smooth and crisp and we did not witness any considerable lag while playing videos.

With a smartphone of this quality one expects solid connectivity and LG has not disappointed us. The phone supports both 2G as well as 3G network. Local connectivity of the phone is boosted by the presence of Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot. There is also Bluetooth 3.0 supporting A2DP and EDR profiles. There is also an HDMI port which helps you to connect the device to a television offering HDMI support. Presence of microUSB 2.0 and 3.5mm audio jack further enhances connectivity options of the device.

Another issue with Optimus 3D is the fact that there is the absence of FM radio in the phone. Now-a-days even the most common phones available in the market are equipped with an FM radio. We were impressed by the audio quality of the phone and did not face much problems hearing in crowded places. The video player of the device is also pretty cool.

Battery life is a disappointing aspect of the phone. The device is equipped with a standard Li-Ion 1500mAh battery which provides a talk time of around 4 hours. We felt that the battery life of the phone could have been improved.
